Can a foil stand up pouch have a window?
Only on a metallised build, where the window area is left clear. Solid foil pouches cannot have a window.

Quoted per order, from £0.25 a pouch
Silver foil stand up pouches with a zipper top, built on PET / foil / PE or metallised PET / PE for the highest oxygen, moisture and light barrier we offer. Plain silver for labelling, or printed with a white under-print.
The short version
Foil stand up pouches are gusseted pouches with an aluminium foil or metallised layer inside the laminate. The foil blocks oxygen, moisture and light far better than clear film, so the pouch keeps aroma in and air out. They come plain silver or printed.

A foil stand up pouch is a gusseted pouch whose middle layer is a thin sheet of aluminium foil, between a PET outer and a PE inner. The foil is a true barrier: oxygen, water vapour and light do not pass through it.
The first photo shows a plain silver pouch with a zipper. The second shows a large open-top foil bag with no zipper, used for bulk fills that are heat sealed once. Both are the same family.
Foil pouches are heavier in the hand than clear film, and the stiffness helps them stand square on a shelf even when half empty. Our broader foil mylar bags range includes flat and gusseted shapes as well.
Roasted coffee loses most of its aroma within a couple of weeks in a clear pouch. Oxygen reacts with the oils, and the flavour flattens.
Protein and milk powders absorb moisture, clump, and then cake into a block at the bottom of the bag. Freeze-dried food loses its crunch and picks up off-flavours.
Seeds are a quieter case. A packet of pumpkin seeds in clear film is fine for a month; in foil it stays dry through a season in a damp shed.
Foil stops all three. Compared with a clear or metallised build, it is the choice when the product has a shelf life measured in months. The laminate and barrier film explainer gives the detail.
Some of these also need a valve. Coffee releases carbon dioxide for days after roasting, and a sealed foil pouch with no valve will balloon.
For when to seal after roasting, read our guide to coffee valves and degassing before you set a packing day.
Metallised PET is a clear film with a microscopic layer of aluminium deposited on it. It looks like foil and gives a good barrier, but it is not the full barrier of solid foil.
Compostable, food-contact and high-barrier films are available as options on request and named on the quote.
| Build | Barrier | Feel | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PET / foil / PE | Highest; near-total block of oxygen and light | Stiffer, creases hold | Coffee, protein, long shelf life |
| Metallised PET / PE | High, below solid foil | Softer, springs back | Snacks, treats, lower cost runs |
| Kraft / foil / PE | Same foil barrier, paper look | Papery outside | Tea and coffee with a natural look |
| Clear PET / PE | Low; product visible | Soft | Short shelf life goods sold on looks |
Foil pouches print with a white under-print beneath the artwork, or the colours take on the silver and look metallic. Some brands use that on purpose: leave the white out under a logo and it shines.
Plain silver with no print is popular with roasters who change blends often and label each one. Full colour digital suits small runs of several designs, while plate print suits one design in volume.
A plain silver pouch still gets a free proof: the dieline shows the gusset, zipper and valve position so you can plan your label size.
A plain silver pouch and a printed one are both quoted on the same form. See silver mylar bags in flat shapes for the non-gusseted version.
Whole bean coffee is light for its volume. 250 g often fills a pouch around 120 × 200 + 80 mm, and 1 kg sits in 200 × 300 + 100 mm. Ground coffee packs tighter, so the same weight uses a shorter pouch.
Powders vary even more. Whey is dense and flows; plant proteins are fluffier. Send us 100 ml of product weighed, and we size the pouch to it.
Ground coffee also degasses faster than beans, so a 500 g ground pouch with a valve needs slightly more headroom to let the valve work.
Open-top bulk bags for 2 kg to 5 kg are made without a zipper. They are sealed once and cut open at the co-packer or in the café.
Foil laminates seal well, but the foil conducts heat quickly, so jaw settings differ from clear film.
Flat foil pouches that are sealed on all four sides are covered on the heat seal foil pouches page.
Foil creases and the crease stays. A pouch dropped on its corner shows a white line, and a sharp fold can crack the barrier layer. Store cartons flat and lift pouches by the top edge.
Pinholes are the hidden risk. Sharp products such as dried pasta edges or seed husks can pierce thin foil from the inside, so tell us if your product is sharp and we quote a thicker PE inner.
Keep filled pouches away from heat sources on the shop floor. Foil blocks light, but it does not block warmth.
Humidity matters for the empty pouches as well. Keep the cartons closed until the day you fill, so the inside PE layer does not pick up dust that spoils the seal.
Ordering a window in a foil pouch and expecting full barrier. The window is clear film, so the barrier drops around it.
Choosing metallised film for coffee to save money, then finding the beans stale at eight weeks. The full foil build earns its cost on coffee.
Sealing a coffee pouch with no valve within a day of roasting. The pouch inflates like a cushion by the time it reaches the customer.
Printing full colour straight onto the silver with no white under-print, then wondering why the brand blue looks like gunmetal. Ask for the white layer unless you want the metallic look.
Tell us the product, fill weight, whether you want a valve or zipper, and plain or printed. Every quantity is quoted per order, starting from £0.25 per unit, and the written quote confirms it.
Free proof first, even for plain pouches so you can check the size. Production is 4–6 business days after approval, and free tracked delivery to any UK address takes 2–3 business days.
Misprints or damage reported with photos inside 10 days are reprinted or refunded. See how UK delivery works for packing detail.
Four short steps: pick a real pouch photo, place your logo on it, choose the colour and finish, and send it. Our designers turn it into a free print-ready proof.
Fill weight, closure, barrier and quantity decide the price. Send what you know and a packaging specialist comes back within one business day with a written quote and a free design proof.

Only on a metallised build, where the window area is left clear. Solid foil pouches cannot have a window.
The aluminium layer is typically 7 to 9 microns inside a laminate of around 100 to 130 microns in total. We confirm the build on the quote.
Only if the coffee has rested for several days before packing. Freshly roasted coffee needs the one-way valve or the pouch inflates.
No. Foil must not go in a microwave. Retort and microwave pouches use a different construction.
Yes. The smooth PET outer takes paper or film labels cleanly, and most roasters label the front and back.
Yes, foil laminates suit vacuum and gas flush machines. Tell us the machine so we set the top strip height.
Foil does not recover from a sharp fold, and the crease shows as a lighter line. Store pouches flat and lift them by the top.
Yes, over a white under-print. Leave the white out in places if you want the silver to show through the colour.
Yes. Large open-top foil bags for 2 kg to 5 kg are sealed once and have no zipper, as in our second photo.
For a shelf life of a few months, often yes. For a year or more, or for a product sold in warm shops, choose the solid foil build.
Yes. The foil layer blocks aroma transfer in both directions, which is why coffee and tea brands use it.
Yes. A gold metallic finish is printed over the foil, and the same build is used for our gold mylar bags.
