The short version

What are fishing bait pouches?

Fishing bait pouches are heavy duty stand up bags for carp and coarse fishing baits such as boilies, pellets, groundbait, particles and pop-ups. They take a zipper so the angler can reseal on the bank, and a laminate that holds in oils and attractors. Sizes run from 50 g hook bait packs to 5 kg boilie bags.

What is a fishing bait pouch?

A fishing bait pouch is a stand up bag built to hold boilies, pellets or groundbait through a season of being thrown in a car boot. The bags in the photo are the typical format: gloss print, a bold fish on the front, a zipper under the top seal and a wide gusset.

The laminate is thicker than a snack pouch. Fish oils, liquid attractors and glugs attack thin films and bleed through to the print.

The zipper is the working part. Anglers open a bag on the bank, take a handful and shut it again. A bag that will not reseal spills across the unhooking mat.

Who orders printed bait pouches?

Bait is a crowded shelf, and the bag is most of the difference between two 1 kg packs of 15 mm boilies. These are the businesses that come to us.

Dog and cat treat makers using the same fish-based ingredients can see our printed pet food and treat pouches page.

  • Boilie rollers selling shelf-life and freezer baits
  • Pellet and particle suppliers bagging from bulk sacks
  • Groundbait and method mix brands
  • Pop-up and wafter makers moving from pots to pouches
  • Tackle shops launching an own-brand bait range
  • Match fishing coaches selling their own mixes

What size bag holds 1 kg of boilies?

Boilies are dense and round, so they pack tightly. One kilogram of 15 mm boilies needs about 1.1 litres of space. Pellets pack tighter still. Groundbait is light and fluffy and needs almost double.

Allow 40 mm above the fill for the zipper and the top seal. Anglers also like a bag they can get a hand into, so do not go narrow.

Bags of 2 kg and more sit better on our flat bottom pouches for heavy fills, which have a square base and side gussets.

Which laminate copes with fish oil and the freezer?

Fish oil is the test. Halibut pellets and oily boilies leave a thin film on everything they touch. A PET / foil / PE laminate keeps that oil inside the bag and off the print.

Freezer baits need a film that stays flexible at minus 18 and does not crack at the gusset fold. Freezer-suited laminates are quoted on request.

Attractors and glugs smell strong. The foil layer keeps aroma in, which matters when a tackle shop stocks ten flavours on one shelf.

Food-contact, high-barrier and compostable film options are available on request and confirmed on your quote. Our guide to pouch laminates and what each layer does covers the choices.

Zippers, windows and hang holes for the tackle wall

A press-to-close zipper is standard. A slider zipper is worth the small extra on bags that are opened with wet, cold or muddy hands, which is every bait bag in February.

A window shows the boilie colour and size, which saves the shop opening a bag. Keep the window below the zipper and away from the gusset fold.

A hang hole above the seal lets small pop-up packs hang on hooks beside the rigs. On a 5 kg bag, a carry handle cut-out is an option instead.

The kraft look bag with a window in the second photo suits natural and particle ranges. See the shapes on our window mylar bags for retail page.

Printing bait bags that stand out on the shelf

Bait brands print loud. Full colour plate print on a white under-print gives the deep greens, purples and pinks in the photo. Gloss finish makes the colour pop under shop lights, and metallic effect ink lifts a logo.

Keep the flavour name large and consistent across the range, so an angler can spot the bag from the aisle. Put the boilie size and the weight in the same corner on every bag.

Our designers set up the range free and send a proof. The artwork guide for printed pouches explains bleed and the gusset panels.

How do you fill bait bags after rolling or dipping?

Most bait firms fill by hand from a tray or a bulk sack. This order keeps oil off the seal, which is where most leaks start.

  1. Air dry boilies on racks until the surface is dry to the touch.
  2. Stand the bags open in a tray with the gusset spread.
  3. Fill by weight with a scoop, not by hand, to keep oil off the top panel.
  4. Wipe the inside of the top 40 mm with a dry cloth if any oil has reached it.
  5. Press the zipper shut and heat seal above it.
  6. For freezer baits, box and freeze the same afternoon.

Glugged and dipped hook baits

Glugged pop-ups are the exception to the dry-fill rule. The baits go in first, the glug is poured over them, and the bag is sealed straight away before the liquid reaches the seal.

Small glug packs of 50 g to 100 g want a short, wide pouch so the baits sit in the liquid rather than above it. A slider zipper helps here, because the track gets sticky.

Those small packs are covered on our mini mylar bags for hook baits page.

Mistakes that wreck a bait bag

Thin film is the first. A snack weight laminate holding oily pellets looks greasy in a week and splits at the gusset in a month.

A window on the gusset fold is the second. The fold works the window film every time the bag is opened, and it cracks.

The third is a bag sized by weight alone. Groundbait needs twice the space of boilies, so a bag that fits 1 kg of boilies takes 500 g of groundbait.

The fourth is no zipper on a 5 kg bag. Anglers decant into a bucket and your bag goes in the bin on day one.

Can one design run across 500 g, 1 kg and 5 kg bags?

Yes. The artwork scales across sizes with the same front panel, and the back panel changes only the weight and the batch code.

We suggest the 1 kg bag as the master size and adapt from it. Quote lines can mix sizes and flavours in a single order, each quoted on its own.

Small 50 g pop-up packs often move to a flat pouch instead, which is covered on our printed flat pouches for small packs page.

Will fish oil bleed through a bait pouch?

Not through a PET / foil / PE laminate. Thin clear film is the one to avoid, since oil migrates through it and stains the print.
