Is the gold printed on or part of the foil?
Part of the film. A tinted lacquer over the metallised layer gives the gold, so it cannot scratch off or fade at the seals.

Quoted per order, from £0.25 a pouch
Metallised gold foil bags in a matte or mirror finish, as a stand up pouch with a zipper or a flat heat-seal bag with tear notches. Print black, white or one spot colour over the gold and let the metal do the rest.
The short version
Gold mylar bags are metallised PET / PE laminate bags tinted gold, finished matte or gloss. They keep light off the contents and slow moisture, and the gold face shows wherever ink is left off the design. We make them stand up or flat, sized to your fill weight, with your print proofed for free.

The gold is in the film, not printed on afterwards. A thin layer of aluminium is vapour-coated onto PET, and a tinted lacquer over it turns the silver metal gold. That layer is then laminated to a PE seal layer.
Because the colour is part of the laminate, it does not scratch off, flake at the seals or fade. The inside of the bag usually stays silver, since the tint sits on the outer face only.
A matte lacquer gives a soft brushed look that hides fingerprints. A gloss lacquer gives a mirror finish that catches light on a shelf.
Anyone selling something that costs more per gram than the bag around it. Chocolate, loose leaf tea, saffron, vanilla pods and artisan fudge all sit well in gold.
The plain colour range, including black, white and silver, is grouped on our foil mylar bags range page so you can compare finishes side by side.
Both start with the same metallised film. The lacquer decides how the bag looks under shop lighting and in photographs, and how it wears in a handbag.
| Finish | Looks like | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Matte gold | Soft brushed metal, no reflections | Black type, minimal designs, photographs well |
| Mirror gold | Bright polished metal | Gifting, favours, bags seen under spotlights |
| Matte gold with spot gloss | Brushed with a glossy logo | Logo-led designs on a plain bag |
| Mirror gold with white print | Bright metal with clean white panels | Ingredient panels that must stay readable |
A 100 g chocolate bar fits a flat bag around 100 × 180 mm. Buttons or truffles of the same weight want a stand up pouch around 110 × 170 mm with a 60 mm gusset, because loose pieces need a base.
Dense products such as saffron and ground spice take far less room than their weight suggests. A 10 g saffron pouch can be as small as 70 × 100 mm.
Give us the fill weight and tell us whether the product is a solid, pieces or a powder. The dimensions behind each weight are listed in our stand up pouch sizes for UK brands guide.
Chocolate blooms when it sees temperature swings and light. Tea and spice lose their aroma to oxygen. The metallised layer under the gold tint stops light outright and slows oxygen and moisture to a crawl.
That is why a gold bag is more than decoration for these products. A paper bag with a gold print looks similar on day one and lets the aroma out by week three.
Food-contact, high-barrier and compostable film options are available on request and confirmed on your quote. Our guide to barrier films and laminates explains how metallised film compares with solid foil.
Black print on matte gold is the classic look and the cheapest, because it is one colour with no under-print. White print on mirror gold is the second favourite and gives a clean label panel.
Pale colours printed straight onto gold take on the tint underneath. A pale pink becomes peach. If you need true brand colours, we lay a white under-print first and print the colour on top.
Leaving areas of bare gold is the trick most designers use. A black panel with the logo knocked out so the gold shows through needs no metallic ink at all. Our printed pouch artwork guide explains how to set that up in the file.
Stand up gold bags carry a press-to-close zipper above the fill with a tear notch above it. The customer tears the top strip off and reseals with the zipper.
Flat gold bags are usually heat seal only with tear notches on both sides. They suit single bars, favours and anything eaten in one sitting.
A slider zipper is an option on larger stand up bags where the customer opens the bag often, such as a 500 g granola. Say which closure you want and we confirm it on the quote.
Most chocolatiers and tea blenders fill gold bags by hand with a scoop and a set of scales. An impulse sealer finishes the job.
Choosing mirror gold for a product handled a lot in the shop. Fingerprints show on gloss, so bags that customers pick up and put down look tired by the afternoon. Matte gold hides them.
Printing pale colours without a white under-print is the second. The gold tint changes the colour, and the proof approval was given on a screen rather than the bag.
The third is expecting an exact gold match to a box or a ribbon. Metallised tints vary slightly between film batches. A proof and a retained sample keep the shade close, and we flag any change before printing.
Easter is the busiest season for gold. Mini eggs, chocolate chicks and hot cross bun flavoured fudge all go into a gold bag with a printed ribbon motif or a plain window.
Wedding and birthday favours use small flat gold bags, often 80 × 120 mm, sealed with a tear notch and tied or stickered. Sugared almonds, macarons and seeds for planting are the usual fills.
If you want a gold bag with a window, a handle or a gift-shaped die cut, the options are on our foil gift bags for favours and presents page.
