The short version

What are ready meal pouches?

Ready meal pouches are stand up bags for dried and dehydrated meals that the customer finishes with hot water, milk or a pan. They hold a single portion or a family pack, stand on their gusset and reseal with a zipper. Wet, shelf-stable meals that are heated in the pack use a retort pouch instead.

What is a ready meal pouch?

A ready meal pouch is a stand up bag that doubles as the cooking vessel or the serving pack. The green pouch in the photo shows the layout: a zipper at the top, a window where the cooked dish is printed, and a gusset deep enough to stand when full.

Most are filled with a dried meal. The customer tears the top, pours in boiling water, presses the zipper shut and waits. Ten minutes later they eat from the pouch.

Others are pantry kits. A dal kit with lentils, spices and a recipe card goes in a kraft look pouch and is cooked in a pan at home.

Which meals and businesses use these pouches?

The pouch suits any meal that starts dry. Wet meals heated in the pack need a different, heavier pouch, covered on our retort pouches for shelf-stable meals page.

  • Expedition and camping meal brands drying their own recipes
  • Meal kit makers selling risotto, paella and curry bases
  • Soup and broth mix producers
  • Overnight oats and porridge brands
  • Student and office lunch kits that need only a kettle
  • Caterers and outdoor centres packing bulk meal bases

What size pouch holds a camping meal plus water?

Size the pouch for the water, not the dry meal. A 120 g dried meal takes 350 to 450 ml of boiling water. The zipper must sit above that line with 30 mm to spare, or the customer cannot close it.

A deep gusset keeps a full pouch upright on uneven ground. We suggest 90 mm or more for anything cooked in the pack.

Our pouch size guide for UK food brands lists more dimensions by fill weight.

Which laminate suits meals cooked in the pouch?

Boiling water inside the pouch is the hard part. The inner PE layer needs to cope with near-boiling water for ten minutes without softening at the seams. Films suited to hot filling or in-pouch cooking are quoted on request.

Dried meals also need a long date. A PET / foil / PE laminate blocks oxygen and moisture, which keeps dried vegetables and meat from going stale over a year in a rucksack.

Kraft / PET / PE gives a pantry look for kits cooked in a pan, where the pouch never meets hot water.

Food-contact, high-barrier and compostable film options are available on request and confirmed on your quote. The layers are explained in our guide to barrier films for food pouches.

Zipper height, fill lines and windows

On a cook-in-pouch meal, the zipper sits higher than on a snack pouch. Ask for the tear notch above the zipper, so the top seal comes off cleanly and the zipper is the opening.

A printed fill line inside the pouch tells the customer where the water should reach. We print it as part of the artwork on the inside face, on request.

A window on a dried meal shows rice and lentils, which reassures a first-time buyer. Keep it off products with dried meat, which can look dull. Our window stand up pouches for food page shows shapes.

A slider zipper is an option for cold hands at a campsite.

Printing a recipe pouch that sells on a shelf

The front sells the dish, so a photo of the cooked meal in the window area works better than a drawing. Matte finish suits outdoor brands; gloss suits bright kitchen kits.

The back carries the instructions in numbered steps, the ingredient list, allergens, nutrition and the weight. Leave a clear box for the best before date.

Our designers lay it out free and send a proof. The pouch artwork and dieline guide explains bleed and panel sizes.

How do you fill and seal meal pouches by hand?

Many UK meal makers start with a bench, scales and an impulse sealer. This order of work keeps dust off the seal and the weights right.

  1. Mix the dried components and check the weight per portion.
  2. Stand the open pouches in a tray so the gusset is spread.
  3. Fill through a funnel that reaches below the zipper track.
  4. Shake the pouch so the mix settles and the zipper area is clear.
  5. Press the zipper shut by hand, then heat seal the top.
  6. Check one pouch from each batch by filling it with water and standing it for ten minutes.

Mistakes that make meal pouches fail

A zipper set too low. The water line reaches the zipper and the customer cannot close the pouch, so steam escapes and the meal stays crunchy.

A shallow gusset. A 150 mm pouch with a 60 mm gusset falls over once 400 ml of water is in it.

A clear pouch for a product with dried meat or dried herbs. Light fades the colour and the meal looks old on the shelf.

Instructions in small type. People read them in a tent by head torch, so set the steps large on the back.

Can the same pouch work for cook-in and pan-cooked kits?

Yes, if you choose the film for the harder job. A laminate that copes with boiling water inside the pouch also suits a kit cooked in a pan.

The artwork differs more than the pouch. Cook-in meals need the water line and the steps on the pouch; pan kits often carry a recipe card inside.

Brands that sell both often run the same pouch size in two designs. Larger grain kits can use our flat bottom pouches for bigger kits instead.
