Can a resealable zipper pouch be opened and closed hundreds of times?
A press-to-close zipper is made for repeated use through the life of the product. Keep the track clean and it keeps closing.

Quoted per order, from £0.25 a pouch
Pouches that open and close many times without losing the seal. Press-to-close or slider zippers, a tear notch above, and a heat seal strip for your filling line, in clear, matte or foil laminates.
The short version
Resealable zipper pouches are flexible pouches with a plastic zipper track sealed inside the top, below a tear-off strip. After the first opening, the customer presses or slides the zipper shut between uses. They come as stand up, flat or foil-backed styles.

Two strips of plastic track are sealed to the inside of the front and back panels, about 30 mm below the top edge. One strip has a rib and the other a groove, and pressing them together closes the pouch.
Above the zipper sits a heat seal strip with a tear notch. Your line seals that strip after filling, so the pouch stays closed until the customer tears it off.
Pull-apart force is set by the track profile. A single rib track opens easily; a double rib track resists being tugged open in a shopping bag but takes more effort every time.
Look at the first photo: a clear-front pouch and a foil-backed blue pouch, both with the zipper visible under the top strip. The red gloss pouch in the second photo uses the same build on a stand up base.
Anything used a portion at a time needs a closure that survives weeks of opening. A folded-over top and a peg does not.
Refill brands in zero waste shops are a growing group: a zipper pouch of rice or lentils goes home, gets topped up from the shop dispenser and comes back.
Powder brands in particular should read our protein powder pouches for UK brands page for scoop and seal detail.
The press-to-close zipper is the standard. It is lighter and lies flat, but it needs two hands and a little pressure to close. The slider rides along the track and closes in one pull.
A slider is an option on request, quoted with the pouch. Slider pouches also have a small plastic stop at each end of the track, which adds about 5 mm to the width you need.
| Zipper type | Closing action | Suits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press-to-close | Pinch along the full width | Most pouches up to 200 mm wide | Powder in the track stops it sealing |
| Slider | One pull of a plastic tab | Wide pouches, 1 kg and above, frequent use | Adds height at the top; on request |
| Double track press-to-close | Two ribs, firmer close | Heavy products, pet food | Harder for some customers to open |
Work from volume. 500 g of whey protein takes less space than 500 g of puffed snacks. Weigh and measure a sample, then add 20 percent headroom above the fill line so the zipper area stays clean.
Wide pouches with a long zipper are harder to close evenly. Above 200 mm wide, consider a slider or a taller, narrower shape.
A 1 kg pouch of whey sits comfortably in 200 × 300 + 100 mm with a 180 mm zipper. The same pouch holding 1 kg of puffed rice would need to be almost half as tall again.
The UK stand up pouch size guide lists dimensions by fill weight for the stand up versions.
Pouches arrive with the zipper closed. Your routine on a bench or semi-automatic line looks like this.
If you use a vacuum or gas flush machine, tell us, because the zipper build and top strip height change for those machines.
A clear PET / PE front with a printed back lets the product sell itself while the back carries ingredients and a barcode. A full foil or metallised build keeps light and oxygen out for powders and treats with fat in them.
For treats with a high fat content, such as dried liver or salmon, a metallised or foil back stops the fat going rancid in light. The clear front can stay, since it is a small share of the surface.
High-barrier, food-contact and compostable film options are available on request and are confirmed on your written quote. For a foil-only zip bag, see our zip lock foil bags page.
The zipper line is a hard edge across the top. Artwork that runs through it looks broken, so most designs place a solid colour band there or leave the strip plain.
Plain, one colour, two colour and full colour print are all available, with matte, gloss or soft touch finishes. Our designers set your files on the dieline for free, mark the zipper and tear notch, and send a proof.
One colour print on a clear-front pouch is a cheap way to look finished: a logo and weight on the front film, full ingredients on the printed back.
Try a layout first in Design Your Pouch with your logo and attach the picture to your quote.
Powder in the track is the main cause of a zipper that will not close. Fill through a funnel that reaches below the zipper.
The second is a pouch too full to close. Headroom matters.
The third is a press-to-close zipper on a 250 mm wide bag for customers with weaker hands. Choose the slider.
A fourth: ordering zipper pouches for a vertical form-fill-seal machine. Pre-made zipper pouches are for bench and pick-and-place fillers; roll film needs its own zipper set-up, so tell us the machine.
Zipper pouches also carry bath salts, body scrubs, craft beads, screws and cable kits. The rules are the same: keep grit out of the track and leave headroom.
Craft and hardware sellers usually want a hang hole as well, so the pouch pegs in store and the zipper keeps the loose parts together after opening.
For bath and body brands, a frosted clear front shows the colour of the salt while the matte panel carries the scent name. See bath salt and scrub pouches for sizes used by soap makers.

A press-to-close zipper is made for repeated use through the life of the product. Keep the track clean and it keeps closing.
It is close to airtight when fully pressed, but not a replacement for the heat seal. Products that need a true barrier rely on the sealed top until first opening.
Yes. Flat zipper pouches have the same track sealed under a tear notch, without a gusset.
On both side seals, just above the zipper track, so the customer tears the strip straight across.
A coloured zipper track is an option on request. The standard track is clear or natural.
Sliders suit widths of 150 mm and above. On small pouches the slider takes up too much of the top.
Yes, if powder sits in the track. Fill through a funnel that reaches below the zipper.
Yes. Tell us the sealer jaw width you use and we set the zipper height to suit.
A freezer laminate is available on request. The zipper still closes at low temperatures but handles better once thawed.
A small domestic heat sealer works for very short runs. For regular use, an impulse sealer is the practical choice.
Yes. Valve and zipper are often used together on roasted coffee pouches. The valve sits on the front panel.
No. The top is left open above the zipper so you can fill it, then seal it on your line.
