Can the window be a custom shape such as a leaf or a heart?
Yes. Any closed shape works, since the window is the unprinted area of the clear film. Fine points under 5 mm are best avoided.

Quoted per order, from £0.25 a pouch
A stand up pouch with a window in the front panel, so nuts, sweets, pulses or bath salts show through. Choose a rectangle, oval or shaped window, clear or frosted, placed where the product settles.
The short version
Stand up pouches with window are gusseted pouches whose front panel has an area left unprinted, so you can see the contents. The window can be fully clear or frosted, in any shape. The rest of the pouch prints with your artwork.

The window is not a hole with a film stuck over it. The pouch body is a clear laminate, and the printed artwork, including any white base, is left out in the window shape. Where there is no ink, you see through.
That is why a window pouch is usually built on PET / PE or BOPP / PE. On a foil laminate a window needs a different construction, which we can quote on request.
A frosted window is made by printing a translucent white over the clear area instead of leaving it bare, which is why it is quoted the same as a clear one.
Our photos show a frosted rectangle on a matte blue pouch holding nuts, a lower band window on a pale green pistachio pouch, and a centred window on a mung bean pouch.
A window sells products with visible texture, colour or shape. It works against you for fine powders, which coat the inside of the film and look dusty.
Pet treat makers use the window differently: it shows the size of the treat, which matters more to a dog owner than the colour.
For sweets and gifting, the printed sweet bags with window options page shows shapes that suit smaller packs.
Product settles to the bottom of a stand up pouch and the top third is often empty air after shipping. A window in that top third shows nothing.
Measure your fill line on a sample pouch before you choose. Leave 15 mm between the window edge and the side seals. On a 250 g nut pouch that means a window roughly 40 to 60 mm high, starting about 25 mm above the gusset fold.
| Window position | Shows | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lower band, full width | The settled product, edge to edge | Nuts, pulses, sweets, salts |
| Centre rectangle | A framed view with artwork around it | Brands with a strong logo above the window |
| Side strip | A narrow vertical glimpse | Dark pouches where a small window keeps the look |
| Shaped cut-out | Product through a logo or motif | Bakeries, gifting, seasonal runs |
A clear window shows true colour and detail. It also shows every scratch and any film of oil left by roasted nuts.
A frosted window softens the view, hides fingerprints and gives a satin look that pairs well with matte print. Dark coloured products read better through clear film; light products such as oats or salts look fine behind frost.
Retailers with bright shop lighting tend to prefer frosted, since clear film reflects spotlights and hides the product behind glare.
Both are options at the same price point on the quote. If you are unsure, our guide to choosing a food pouch walks through the decision.
Light reaches the product through the window, and clear film has a lower oxygen barrier than foil. For nuts and seeds with oils that go rancid, keep the window modest and choose a high-barrier clear film.
High-barrier, food-contact and compostable films are options on request. We confirm the build on the quote once we know your shelf life target.
Sweets, pulses and bath salts are forgiving. Roasted coffee is not, and a window is rarely the right call for it. Foil-based bags with a window are on the mylar bags with window page.
The printed area surrounds the window, so artwork needs a clean edge against the clear zone. A white under-print behind the colours stops the product showing through the design.
Matte finishes hide the window edge well. Spot gloss over matte can highlight a logo above the window.
Dark backgrounds suit frosted windows and pale backgrounds suit clear ones. A navy pouch with a frosted band looks deliberate; the same navy with a sharp clear rectangle can look like a gap in the print.
Our designers place the window on the dieline for free and send a proof that shows the clear area as a grey shape, so you can judge the balance before print.
Five minutes with a sample pouch and a roll of tape settles most window questions.

Windows do not change the sealing routine. Fill through the open top, keep the seal strip clean and seal above the zipper.
Clear film does mark more easily than printed film, so handle pouches by the edges and keep them away from grit on the filling table. Store them flat and out of direct sunlight.
If the window sits low, product pressing against it while you seal can leave a mark on the film. Fill, let the product settle, then seal with the pouch upright rather than flat on its face.
Printing a dark background right up to a clear window without a white under-print gives a grey halo at the edge. Placing the window over the zipper line is another frequent one.
A shaped window with sharp inner corners also cracks the print edge over time. Round the corners by 3 mm or more.
Brands also forget that a window shows the inside of the front panel. Any product dust that sticks there is visible, so fill gently with powdery coatings.
Finally, do not order a window for a product that is sold in an opaque pouch for a reason. Light-sensitive oils, herbs and spices lose colour behind glass-clear film.

No. The window is part of the same film, not a cut-out, so the pouch strength is unchanged.
Yes, a front and back window is an option. Most brands keep the back for the legal panel and barcode.
Roasted nuts can leave a light film over time. A frosted window hides it better than clear.

It is a frosted effect over the clear area, giving a satin look without texture on the outside.
Up to most of the front panel, leaving 15 mm clear of the side seals. A very large window leaves little space for branding.
