The short version

What are snack pouches?

Snack pouches are stand up or flat pouches with a press-to-close zipper, used for nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, popcorn, jerky and roasted pulses. The laminate keeps crunch in and air out, and the zipper lets the customer finish the pack over a few days. The pouches in the photos are gloss and matte stand up styles with a tear notch above the zipper.

What is a snack pouch and why does it have a zipper?

A snack pouch is a small stand up pouch with a bottom gusset so it sits upright on a shelf or counter. The top has a tear notch, and under that a press-to-close zipper.

Nuts and dried fruit rarely get eaten in one go. The zipper lets the customer close the pack, so the last handful is as crisp as the first.

Single serves of 30 g or 40 g often skip the zipper and use a plain heat seal. For packs sold to be reopened, the resealable zipper pouch range is the starting point.

Which snack businesses use printed pouches?

Snack pouches are used by producers at every scale, from a kitchen-table granola maker to a factory packing jerky in the thousands.

Sugar-based lines, such as fudge and coated nuts, usually go in a smaller gift format. Those are covered on the printed sweet bags page.

  • Nut roasters selling flavoured almonds and cashews online
  • Dried fruit and trail mix brands supplying gyms and offices
  • Popcorn makers running six flavours at farmers' markets
  • Jerky and biltong producers selling through pubs and butchers
  • Roasted chickpea and lentil snack start-ups listed in health shops
  • Farm shops bagging their own crisps under a house label

What size snack pouch do I need for 150 g of trail mix?

Snacks vary hugely in density. 150 g of cashews fits a 130 × 200 mm pouch with room to spare, while 150 g of popcorn needs a pouch twice that volume.

Weigh a typical fill, then measure how much of a sample pouch it fills. Aim for about two thirds, so there is room above the product for the zipper to close without crushing anything.

The table gives a starting point. Fill weights for every pouch size appear in our stand up pouch size chart.

Snack150 g pouch sizeWhy
Cashews or almonds120 × 190 + 70 mmDense, settles flat
Trail mix130 × 200 + 80 mmMixed sizes, some air
Dried mango130 × 210 + 80 mmFlat slices stack tall
Popcorn180 × 280 + 100 mmVery light, mostly air

Crunch, grease and light: picking the laminate

Crunchy snacks go soft when moisture gets in. Nuts also hold oil, which goes rancid when oxygen and light reach it.

A metallised PET layer blocks light and most moisture, which is why gloss or matte BOPP over metallised PET is the usual snack laminate. For a clear front, use PET / PE and accept a shorter shelf life. Popcorn and crisps crush as well as soften, so leave headspace and pack the cartons upright.

Food-contact and high-barrier films are available on request, confirmed on the written quote. Our guide to pouch laminates and barrier compares the options layer by layer.

Should the snack pouch have a window?

A window sells a colourful mix. Customers want to see the cranberries and the whole almonds before they buy.

Windows cost shelf life, though. Light reaches the product, so oily nuts and anything with a delicate colour fade faster. Keep the window small or frosted for those.

Plain roasted peanuts or popcorn look better in a solid printed pouch with a photo. Shaped windows and sizing are shown on the window stand up pouch page.

Flat pouch or stand up pouch for single serves?

A 30 g single serve does not need to stand up. A flat three side seal pouch costs less, fills faster and packs neatly in a display box.

Stand up pouches earn their place from about 80 g upward, where the customer keeps the pack and the shelf presence matters. A flat pouch also hangs on a clip strip beside the till, which stand up pouches cannot do.

Many brands run both: a flat pouch for the till point and a zipper pouch for the shelf. Single serve formats live on the printed flat pouches page.

Printing flavour ranges on snack pouches

Most snack brands run several flavours. Digital print lets you change the colour and flavour name between pouches in the same run without new plates.

The red cashew pouch in the photos uses one bold colour with a product photo and a short ingredient callout. That layout reads from a metre away, which is what a crowded shelf needs.

Leave a clear box on the back for the best before date and lot code. Bleed, seal margins and font sizes are covered in the artwork rules for printed snack pouches.

How do you fill snack pouches so the zipper still closes?

Crumbs and salt in the zipper track are the main reason a snack pouch will not close. These steps avoid it.

Oily snacks like coated nuts benefit from a stronger barrier. The foil stand up pouches for oily foods are the step up.

  1. Open the pouch fully and fold the top 20 mm outward, over the zipper, before filling.
  2. Weigh the snack into a scoop and pour it down the centre of the pouch.
  3. Stop at two thirds full and tap the base twice to settle the contents.
  4. Unfold the top, brush any crumbs off the seal area and close the zipper.
  5. Heat seal above the zipper and check one pouch in every batch by tearing and reopening it.

Mistakes that make snack pouches look cheap

An over-filled pouch bulges, the zipper will not close and the print stretches. Order the next size up rather than squeezing.

Dark colours on cheap gloss film show every fingerprint and scuff. Matte or soft touch matte hides handling much better.

Tiny text on the front panel is another one. A snack pouch is picked up on impulse, so the flavour name should be readable at arm's length. For a premium range with a squarer footprint, compare the flat bottom pouches for premium snacks.
