The short version

What are freeze dried food bags?

Freeze dried food bags are high barrier pouches for products that have had their water removed, such as freeze dried sweets, fruit pieces, vegetables, meal components and pet treats. They are sized by volume rather than weight, because freeze dried food is light and bulky. A zipper lets the customer reseal between servings.

What makes a freeze dried food bag different?

Freeze dried food has had almost all its water pulled out under vacuum. The result is light, crisp and full of tiny pores. Those pores grab moisture from the air the moment the product is exposed.

A freeze dried food bag is built around that fact. The film is a high barrier laminate, the zipper lets the customer reseal, and the pouch is far larger than the fill weight suggests.

The blue bags in the photos hold 120 g of freeze dried sweets in a pouch that would take 400 g of ordinary sweets. That ratio is normal for this product.

Who buys freeze dried food bags in the UK?

The freeze dried sweet trade has grown fast through market stalls, social media shops and sweet shop counters. Behind it sit fruit snack brands, meal makers and treat producers using the same dryers.

Pet treats need their own panel layout, which is covered on our pouches for pet food and treats page.

  • Freeze dried sweet sellers at markets, fairs and online
  • Fruit snack brands drying strawberries, mango and raspberries
  • Camping and expedition food makers selling meal components
  • Home freeze dryer owners turning a hobby into a shop
  • Pet treat makers drying liver, fish and chicken
  • Smoothie and breakfast brands selling fruit powders

What size bag holds 100 g of freeze dried sweets?

Work from volume. A puffed chewy sweet grows to three or four times its size in the dryer and does not shrink back. Weigh a filled sample bag and measure how high the product sits.

As a starting point, 100 g of mixed puffed sweets fills a 130 × 200 mm pouch with an 80 mm gusset to just below the zipper. Fruit slices pack flatter and need less.

Our stand up pouch size chart gives the full dimension list. Tell us the product and we size the bag from a sample.

Which film stops freeze dried food going soft?

Water vapour is the enemy. In a thin clear bag, freeze dried strawberries go leathery in days and sweets lose their crunch within a week in a humid kitchen.

PET / foil / PE blocks water vapour and oxygen almost completely. It is the right choice for dates beyond three months. Metallised PET / PE is a lighter barrier that suits sweets sold within a few weeks at a stall.

Some producers drop an oxygen absorber or desiccant sachet into the bag before sealing. The film still has to hold the barrier, or the sachet fills up and stops working.

Food-contact, high-barrier and compostable film options are available on request and confirmed on your quote. The differences are set out in our guide to pouch films and barrier layers.

Zippers, windows and the sharp edge problem

A press-to-close zipper is standard. Place a tear notch above it so the customer opens the top seal and finds the zipper ready.

A window on the lower front shows the colours of the sweets, which is most of the sale. A clear window is a weaker barrier than foil, so keep it small on long-date products.

Freeze dried sweets have sharp, glassy edges. A thin window film can puncture when the bag is dropped. Ask for the thicker window option on sharp products, or use a frosted strip rather than a large panel.

Bulk packs of hard pieces suit the wider base on our flat bottom pouches for heavier fills page.

Printing bold artwork on freeze dried bags

This category sells on colour and fun. Bright full colour digital print on a white under-print keeps the design loud on foil. A gloss finish adds to the sweet shop feel; matte suits fruit and meal brands.

Leave a clear box for the weight, ingredients and allergen line. Freeze dried sweets usually carry the ingredients of the original sweet, so give that panel space.

Our designers set it up free and send a proof. See how to prepare pouch artwork files before you send.

How do you pack freeze dried food straight from the dryer?

Speed matters more here than on any other product we print. The clock starts when the dryer door opens.

  1. Have bags open and counted on the bench before the cycle ends.
  2. Move the trays to a dry room, not the kitchen where kettles run.
  3. Fill by weight with a scoop, keeping the product below the zipper line.
  4. Add a desiccant or oxygen absorber sachet if you use one.
  5. Press the zipper shut and heat seal above it straight away.
  6. Label and box within the hour, then store in a cool dry place.

Mistakes we see on freeze dried packaging

Ordering by weight is the big one. A bag sized for 100 g of normal sweets takes 25 g of freeze dried ones and looks half empty.

A fully clear bag is the second. It photographs well on the first day and the product is chewy by the time the customer opens it.

The third is a thin window on sharp sweets. A single pierced window lets in moisture and the whole bag is lost.

The fourth is no reseal on a sharing size. People eat a few pieces and leave the rest open on the side. A zipper saves the bag.

Flat packs for small fruit portions

Not everything needs a stand up bag. Twenty gram packs of strawberry slices or a single serving of mango chips sell well in a flat three side seal pouch with a tear notch.

The flat pouch posts as a letter and fits a lunchbox. The mango packs in the photos are this style, in a kraft look print on a foil laminate.

Our three side seal pouches for small portions page covers that format.

How much bigger should a freeze dried sweet bag be?

Allow three to four times the volume of the original sweets. A 100 g bag of puffed sweets needs roughly 900 ml of space.
