The short version

What are dual compartment pouches?

Dual compartment pouches are flat pouches with a vertical seal down the centre that makes two separate pockets. Each pocket has its own press-to-close zipper and tear notch. They let you sell two products, two flavours or two steps of a routine in a single pack.

What is a dual compartment pouch?

Picture a flat zipper pouch, then run a second seal straight down the middle from the top to the bottom. The result is two pockets side by side that share one back and one front panel.

Each pocket gets its own zipper and its own tear notch, so the customer can open the left side today and the right side next week.

The centre seal is a full-strength seal, not a fold. Powder on one side cannot migrate to the other. It is the two-pocket cousin of our single pocket resealable zipper pouches.

Why would a brand use two compartments?

Because some products are sold as a pair. A matcha and a sweetener, a dry rub and a finishing salt, a scrub and a bath soak. Two pouches cost more to make, fill, label and post than one.

Sampling is the other reason. A Manchester tea company can send two blends in one pack and ask which the customer prefers.

Protein brands pairing a pre and post workout formula often start from our protein powder pouches with a zipper and add the centre seal.

  • Two-flavour sample packs for subscription boxes
  • Day and night supplement powders
  • Cereal or granola with a separate topping or fruit
  • Rice or pasta with a dry seasoning on the other side
  • Pet treat training kits with two reward types
  • Wedding and party favours with two kinds of sweet

How big does each pocket need to be?

Each pocket is a narrow flat pouch, so it holds less than you expect. A 150 × 220 mm pouch gives two pockets about 65 mm wide, enough for 50 g of powder each but not 50 g of popcorn.

Measure your bulkiest product first. Both pockets are the same size as standard, though unequal pockets are possible on request if one product needs more room.

Keep the overall width under about 240 mm. Wider than that, the pouch flops in the hand and the centre seal takes more stress.

Which laminate works for two different products?

Both pockets share the same film, so choose for the more demanding product. If one side is a powder that clumps in damp air, the whole pouch goes in metallised PET / PE or PET / foil / PE.

Matte black, like the pouch in the first photo, is popular because the print on both sides reads as one design. Matte BOPP / PE suits short shelf life pairings where the product shows through a window.

Food-contact, high-barrier and compostable film options are available on request and are named on the quote. Our barrier film and laminate guide ranks each structure.

Zippers, notches and the centre seal

Each pocket carries a press-to-close zipper running from the outer edge to the centre seal. A slider zipper is not used here because the slider cannot pass the centre seal.

Tear notches sit on both outer edges above the zipper. The customer tears from the outside towards the middle and stops at the seal.

The centre seal is usually 8 to 10 mm wide. That band is printable, so a thin line or a colour change there helps the customer see the two sides.

Printing a design across two pockets

You have one front panel, split by a vertical seal. The strongest designs treat the two halves as a pair: same layout in two colours, or one image that reads across both.

Put the product names at the top of each pocket, above the zipper, where the film stays flat. Nutrition and legal text go on the back, where either side can carry it.

Full colour digital print lets you run several pairings in one order. The dieline we send marks the seal band, and our artwork rules for printed pouches explain bleed and the areas to keep clear.

How do you fill a dual compartment pouch?

Each pocket is filled and sealed on its own. On a line, the pouch passes two filling heads; by hand, it is two short operations.

  1. Open the left zipper, hold the pocket square and fill it, keeping product below the zipper.
  2. Press the left zipper shut, then seal the left top on your sealer.
  3. Repeat for the right pocket with the second product.
  4. Check the centre seal has no product trapped against it on either side.
  5. Stack flat, alternating the direction so the zippers do not all sit on one edge.

Mistakes to avoid with two-pocket pouches

Pairing a wet product with a dry one in a film chosen for the dry side. Choose for the harder product, or ask us about a different film for each side, which is possible but not standard.

Expecting the pouch to stand up. It is a flat style; if you need it on a shelf, a hang hole in the top seal is the usual answer.

Printing text that runs across the centre seal. Letters on the seal band distort, so stop text 5 mm either side.

Filling one pocket far heavier than the other. The pouch hangs lopsided on a peg and the heavy side pulls on the seal. Several of these come up on our pouch questions and answers page.

Could a window suit one side?

Yes. A window on one pocket lets the customer see the product that sells the pack, such as dried fruit, while the powder on the other side stays behind print.

Windows can be clear or frosted and cut to a shape. Keep the window at least 10 mm from the centre seal and from the outer edge.

On foil laminates the window is a strip where the foil is left out, so it lowers the barrier for that pocket slightly. See the same idea on our mylar bags with a clear window.

Can the two compartments be different sizes?

Yes, on request. The centre seal moves off-centre so one pocket is wider, and we show the split on the proof.
