The short version

What are coffee pouches with valve?

Coffee pouches with valve are high-barrier pouches fitted with a small one-way degassing valve, usually set in the upper third of the front or back panel. The valve lets the gas that roasted beans give off escape, while keeping oxygen out. We print them in kraft, matte black or foil finishes, with a zipper or heat seal, to your fill weight.

What does the one-way valve on a coffee pouch actually do?

Roasted beans keep releasing carbon dioxide for days after they leave the drum. Seal them in a bag with no valve and the bag swells, then the seals split or the bag bursts open on the shelf.

A one-way degassing valve is a small plastic disc welded into the film. Gas inside pushes a thin membrane open and escapes. Air outside cannot push the membrane the other way, so oxygen stays out.

That matters because oxygen is what turns a bright roast flat and papery within a fortnight. Our guide to coffee bag valves and degassing covers the timings in more detail.

Which roasters and cafés use valve pouches?

Any business that packs coffee within a week of roasting needs a valve. If you buy pre-rested beans and bag them a month later, you may not.

The roasters we print for range from one-drum start-ups to wholesale operations supplying dozens of cafés. Pouches for other coffee formats, such as pods, drip bags and cold brew grounds, sit in the wider printed coffee bags range.

  • Speciality roasters selling 250 g retail bags online and at markets
  • Cafés roasting on site and bagging for the counter
  • Subscription coffee services posting a fresh bag every month
  • Wholesale roasters supplying 1 kg bags to restaurants and offices
  • Farm shops and delis stocking a local roaster under their own label

What size valve pouch holds 250 g, 500 g or 1 kg of beans?

Whole beans take up more room than ground coffee of the same weight. A 250 g bag of beans needs about 20 percent more volume than 250 g of espresso grind.

The table below gives starting points for whole beans. Tell us your grind and we adjust the height, since a bag that is too tall folds over and looks half empty.

For a fuller set of dimensions by fill weight, the stand up pouch sizes guide lists every common weight.

Stand up, side gusset or flat bottom: which shape for coffee?

The classic 1 kg coffee bag is a side gusset bag, like the kraft one in the photos. It packs tight in a carton and is usually closed with a tin tie or a heat seal.

Stand up pouches suit 250 g retail. They sit upright on a shelf and take a zipper easily, but the rounded base makes them a little wider than their fill.

Flat bottom bags give the squarest look, with five printable panels and a box-like footprint. Roasters who want a premium shelf presence tend to choose flat bottom pouches with a zipper and ask for the valve on the back panel.

Laminates that keep roasted coffee fresh

Coffee has three enemies: oxygen, moisture and light. A foil layer blocks all three, which is why PET / foil / PE and kraft / foil / PE are the most common coffee laminates we print.

Metallised PET is a lighter alternative with a slightly lower barrier, and it suits beans that sell within a few weeks. Clear windows are not a good idea on coffee, because light reaches the beans.

Compostable kraft-based film is an option on request for roasters who want a paper-led pack, confirmed on the quote. The layer-by-layer differences are set out in our barrier films and laminates guide.

Where does the valve sit and does it show on the print?

The valve is welded through the film in the upper third of a panel, before the bag is formed. Our designers mark a keep-out circle of about 25 mm on the dieline so your logo does not run under it.

On a stand up pouch, most roasters put the valve on the back panel beside the roast notes. On a flat bottom bag it can go on the back or a side gusset.

A valve fitted to a matte black bag is nearly invisible from the front. Look at the matte black stand up pouches if you want that look with a valve added.

Zipper, tin tie or heat seal only

A press-to-close zipper lets the customer reseal a 250 g bag at home. Pair it with a tear notch above the zipper so the first opening is clean.

Wholesale 1 kg bags rarely need a zipper. Baristas tip the whole bag into a hopper, so a heat seal across the top is enough and saves cost.

If you fold and tin tie, ask for the bag without a zipper and with a longer top seal area. Our side gusset bags for coffee and grains are made that way by default.

Printing kraft and black coffee pouches

Kraft prints well in one or two colours, and the paper texture shows through lighter inks. For a bright white logo on kraft or black, we lay down a white under-print first.

Full colour digital print suits roasters running six single-origin bags in small numbers. Plate print makes sense once one design runs into the thousands.

Send vector logos and leave roast date and batch fields blank for a sticker or stamp. The file checklist is in our artwork guide for printed pouches.

How do you fill and seal valve pouches on a small roastery line?

Most small roasters fill by hand with a scale and a scoop, then seal with a bench impulse or band sealer. The steps below keep the seal clean and the valve working.

Bag counts per hour matter when you quote. Tell us how you fill and we can suggest a kraft stand up pouch with a wider mouth if hand filling is slow.

  1. Rest beans for the time your roast needs, then weigh each fill on a tared scale.
  2. Open the pouch and fold the top edge outward so no bean dust lands on the seal area.
  3. Fill through a funnel or scoop, keeping the fill level below the zipper or seal line.
  4. Brush the inside of the seal area, then seal at the temperature set for the laminate.
  5. Squeeze the bag gently; a faint hiss from the valve shows it is venting as it should.

Mistakes roasters make with valve pouches

The most common one is bagging too soon after roasting. The valve will cope, but the bag can puff up in transit and look faulty.

Another is printing the roast date inside the valve keep-out area, where it gets hidden. Keep the stamp box lower on the panel.

Finally, some roasters pick a clear window to show the beans. Light is the enemy here, so use a photo of the beans on the print instead. A window only makes sense for decaf samples sold within days, and for those the stand up pouches with a window are the better fit.
