Does matte black show fingerprints?
Far less than gloss black. Soft touch matte hides them best of the three finishes.

Quoted per order, from £0.25 a pouch

The short version
Matte black stand up pouches are gusseted pouches with a black outer layer in a flat, non-reflective finish. They are printed with white, metallic or coloured inks over the black, or left plain. A gloss black version is available for brands that want shine.

It is a stand up pouch with a black outer surface in a soft, flat finish. The laminate is usually matte BOPP over metallised PET, so the black is opaque and the inside keeps light and oxygen off the product.
Our second photo shows the typical use: a black bakery pouch with white type and a flower-shaped window showing iced cookies. The first photo shows the gloss black version with a hang hole, which some brands prefer for a wet-look shine.
The matte surface comes from a matte BOPP outer film or a matte varnish over the print. Soft touch is a thicker coating with a velvet feel and is quoted as a finish option.
Black hides the fill line, so the product's appearance does not matter unless you add a window.
Black reads as premium on a shelf full of white and kraft. It suits brands charging more per gram than their neighbours.
Coffee roasters pair black with a copper or gold logo and a valve. Protein brands tend to use pure white type on soft touch black, with the flavour name in a single accent colour.
For bakeries the cookie and biscuit bags page covers portion sizes and window shapes.
Ordinary CMYK inks vanish on black. The print needs a white layer under any colour, or inks made to sit on dark film.
Metallic effect and spot gloss are finish options quoted with the pouch. The metallic effect is printed, not foil stamped, so it carries fine detail but reads as a satin sheen rather than a mirror.
| Ink or effect | How it looks | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| White ink | Crisp, bright type and line art | Logos, product names, weights |
| White under-print plus colour | Full colour images on black | Product photos, illustrations |
| Metallic effect | Gold or silver sheen on the matte | Logos, borders, edition marks |
| Spot gloss over matte | Shiny black on flat black, no colour | Subtle logo repeats, patterns |
Matte black is flat and shows fingerprints less. Soft touch matte adds a velvet feel that customers notice when they pick the pouch up. Gloss black is the shiniest and marks the most, but it photographs with a strong highlight.
Soft touch scuffs on rough transit packaging, so pack those pouches in cartons with a liner.
For market stalls and farm shops where customers pick pouches up, matte or soft touch is the practical pick. For photography and online sales, gloss black often wins because of the highlight.
Compare it with a silver finish on our foil stand up pouches page if you are choosing between the two.
Yes, and a shaped window is the main reason to put one on black. The cookie pouch in the photo uses a flower outline, which reads as a design element rather than a hole.
Clear windows show the product best on black, because there is no competing colour. Frosted windows look like a soft grey panel on black, which suits pale products such as bath salts and oats.
Keep the window small enough to leave the black dominant, and place it over the settled product. Clear or frosted windows are both available.
Bakeries often match the window shape to the cookie cutter. Send a sketch and our designers draw it on the dieline for free.
Light breaks down fats and flavour oils. An opaque black laminate keeps light off the product, which matters for coffee, nuts, chocolate and the oils in bath products.
The metallised layer inside adds an oxygen and moisture barrier. Food-contact, high-barrier and compostable builds are options on request, written into the quote.
Black also hides product settling. A pouch of coffee that drops a third of its height after shipping looks the same from the shelf, which is not true of a clear or window pouch.
Coffee roasters should ask for the one-way valve. Our valve and degassing guide for roasters explains where it goes.
Dark pouches catch out designers used to white paper. Follow these steps.
Our pouch artwork guide with white ink notes has the file set-up.
Sealing is the same as any BOPP / PE pouch. Set the jaw temperature for the laminate and test three seals before the run.
Handling is where black differs. Matte black shows scuffs from rough bench surfaces and gloss black shows fingerprints, so wear cotton gloves on a packing table and keep the surface clean.
Store the cartons out of sunlight. Over months, direct sun can fade print on any pouch, and it shows most on black.
Printed black pouches hide the fill line, so weigh every pouch rather than filling by eye. A short pouch with a light product can look half empty if a customer squeezes it.
Sending artwork with CMYK white, which prints as nothing. Choosing gloss black for a product handled at a market stall, then finding every pouch streaked with fingerprints.
Using tiny white text for the ingredient list. Fill-in on dark film makes 5 pt white type unreadable.
Forgetting that a hang hole needs 15 mm of clear seal above the zipper. Tell us if you need one.
Ordering black for a product that must show its colour, such as coated sweets, then adding a tiny window as an afterthought. Decide the window first and design around it.
